The action

The action aims to further improve e-learning infrastructures and to design and develop new structures. Specifically, on the basis of the expertise developed and the experience gained by the existing scientific and technical staff of the UotA and in collaboration with young scientists, the action

  1. a) will help modernize the asynchronous and modern remote education infrastructure in order to optimally support mobile learning and the delivery of MOOCs,
  2. b) will reform the standards for the design and delivery of e-learning programs at the training level and in collaboration with the Center for Training and Lifelong Learning of the University of the Aegean,
  3. c) will support the provision of online remote education in the postgraduate programs of the UotA, especially in the new context where 50% of the education can be provided remotely,
  4. d) will support applied research in the field of online remote education in line with the specificities of the UotA as a multi-ethnic HEI; and
  5. e) will support synergy between the UotA and local communities for the specialization and training of human resources, through the co-design and delivery of targeted training programs related to tourism, culture and local entrepreneurship.

The objective of the action is to strengthen the existing e-learning infrastructure and services of the University of the Aegean and to research and develop new innovative services that will support mobile learning and the offer of MOOCs by the institution. The main objective is always the active contribution of the University to the development and strengthening of human resources through continuous, lifelong learning and uninterrupted access to valid, scientific knowledge, through training programs that are accessible regardless of age, gender, employment status, place of residence, etc., with emphasis on mobility, the improvement of specific professional skills and convergence with real needs of the labor market, starting from the South Aegean Region. The aim is also to exploit the scientific knowledge and practices of the university’s academic community for the benefit of other social categories that need and seek continuing professional training or specialization, or simply knowledge in selected subjects. Also, a key objective is the implementation, within the framework of the action, of model pilot MOOC courses, in terms of educational design and technology, in order to evaluate the necessity, implementation methodology, costing and overall management of relevant programs by the institution. In addition, the action will deal with the evaluation of the existing methods and techniques of implementation and delivery of e-learning by the University of the Aegean, taking into account the experience and know-how that has been developed since 2004, with the aim of providing the academic community with feedback and useful conclusions that will lead to any necessary reformulation of the institution’s strategy regarding online distance education. Finally, the above objectives are part of an integrated research and development framework, which the University of the Aegean aspires to cultivate as a whole through the project.

The goal of the action is to strengthen the existing infrastructure and remote learning services (e-learning) of the University of the Aegean and research for the development of new ones with the ultimate goal of synergy between the University and local communities for the specialization and training of human resources, through the co-design and offer of targeted training programs related to tourism, culture and local entrepreneurship.

[1] Laboratory of Psychology, Educational Research and Media in Education.

The Laboratory serves teaching and research needs in various disciplines, such as Media Pedagogy and Teaching, covering the research, educational and teaching needs of related fields, such as Media Pedagogy-Media Education (Media, Film, ICT, Internet), Media Teaching and Design of Electronic Materials, Remote Education, etc. The relevant know-how has been acquired both in the framework of the group "Digital Media in Education and Media Literacy" and in the framework of the MSc "Education Sciences - Education using New Technologies" and refers to two central dimensions, which form the basis of this proposal: a) the production of audiovisual products and b) the creation of digital experiences. The research team is composed of faculty members and Laboratory Educational Staff of the Department, faculty members of the National Kapodistrian University and of the University of West Attica, as well as young researchers related to areas of interest such as entrepreneurship, audiovisual productions, augmented reality and culture and intangible heritage.

[2] Laboratory of Social and Educational Research, Department of Sciences of Preschool Education and Educational Design

The aim of the laboratory is to support research and scientific work with the most modern means. One of the important objectives of the laboratory is the study of the social dimensions of technology in contemporary social and educational phenomena. The Laboratory is housed in a space of about 40 m2, has a great variety of equipment and a specialized technical support team. Since 2004, it has been supporting e-learning processes of the DSPEED, with the design and management through WebCT (LMS platform) of both departmental and institutional activities. Over the last 15 years, it has supported and continues to support postgraduate and lifelong learning programs, both technically and in terms of research.

At the same time, a research team with long experience in research and exploitation of virtual worlds in education (within the framework of the MSc "New Forms of Education and Learning"), development and implementation of educational applications, particularly in adult education and vocational training, as well as in the implementation of co-funded projects, operates within the laboratory. The research team is composed of faculty members and members of the Department's Laboratory Educational Staff, as well as young researchers (doctoral and post-doctoral candidates) in the research fields addressed by this action. With the decisive support of the laboratory, students' theses and dissertations have been produced, as well as rich work in evaluation in education. The equipment of the laboratory is expected to be reinforced with equipment to support actions, applications and services related to emerging VR/AR technologies as well as mobile devices. This equipment has been linked to two postdoctoral research projects and is expected to expand the research towards new important directions of educational research.
